WE NEED YOUR HELP We recently rescued two young boys and two young girls from a dirt-floor hunting kennel. One girl, Pua, has auto immune disease and, in spite of her condition, was adopted by a very kind family who is giving her TLC during what is expected to be a shorter than normal life. Misty, the other girl, was adopted immediately and the two boys, Ricky and Charlie, went to a foster home. Five days later, all three became very sick with temps spiking at 106. After a week of medications and treatment, many vet consults including UC Davis, Charlie was released in good health, but Ricky was barely hanging on. Cause of infection remained unknown. Misty's vet put her on IV fluids for several days and treated her with various antibiotics and other medications. She would get better for part of a day, then relapse. Her temperature ranged from 103 to 106.6 and she was lethargic. We finally had to put poor Misty down. Thankfully, Charlie & Ricky recovered fully. While there was never a definitive diagnosis, we finally concluded the cause of this illness was probably salmon poisoning. Our expenses to attempt to give these four deserving dogs a chance for a real life exceeded $4500 and this is just one example of very expensive interventions we participated in this year so far. The first quarter of 2008 saw our war chest diminish by $10,000. If you are able to make a donation to help us replenish our funds, we would be very grateful. ...Michael, President NCWR |
