New Adoption ProcessTo our community, we want to let you know about a necessary change to our application process.
We have traditionally kept a "waiting list" of potential adopters. These adopters wait for us to contact them about dogs that would be a good fit. We have typically had a waiting list for certain types of dogs, especially youngsters. Based on feedback from our volunteers and adopters, we feel it would be better to amend our process to post almost all dogs that we intake on social media as well as our website. Once a dog is posted as “available” we will ask for applications for that particular dog. We will review, interview, and select the adopter most suitable for that Weimaraner’s needs. Due to constraints in volunteer availability, we may not be able to interview every applicant for every dog. If you have already filled out an application to adopt and are interested in a particular dog on our website or Facebook, please send us an email to NCWRInfo@googlegroups.com or send us a message on Facebook. We are sorry if this is an inconvenience. Please bear with us as we make this change in our application and placement process. You may always PM us if you have questions or need clarification. Application and ApprovalYou must complete the entire application and approval process before meeting any of our rescue dogs. This process consists of completing an application using the button below, a phone interview, and a home visit (during the pandemic, we’ll ask for photos of your yard instead).
For the safety of adopting families and our rescue dogs, we do not place dogs in homes with children under 10 years old unless it is a puppy or the dog has a known, positive history of living with babies & toddlers. Please be patient as it may take a few days to respond to your application. |
Our Ideal Home |
Adoption Fees |
|
Our adoption fees vary per adoption, ranging from $0 to $700 depending on many factors but primarily the dog’s age. Sometimes we need to spend very little on vet care, rehab etc. and sometimes we spend thousands to give a Weim a chance at a happy life.
If we based our fees on our costs for each dog respectively, young healthy dogs with small fees would be quite easy to place. Older dogs with issues and huge fees however would be very hard to place. Similar to insurance, our fee structure spreads our costs over all our rescues to make sure every dog finds a forever home. |
Available for Adoption
Meet dear Duke! He is 9 years old. He came to rescue because his owner had to start traveling for work. Duke is now in one of NCWR’s fabulous foster homes. His foster says Duke knows basic commands, including “sit, stay and shake.” Duke is food motivated, so additional training should be a snap! He is used to being home for a few hours (he shows a bit of anxiety for a bit (whining/pacing for a bit, but is not destructive). Duke was raised with children. However, we are looking for a home for Duke with older children (age 10 and up), per our placement policy). He is a bit over weight and we are starting to address that in the foster home. Duke is neutered and up to date on vaccines. He just had a dental cleaning and needed no extractions. He had a blood panel and urinalysis and got a clean bill of health. If you are interested in adopting Duke, please fill out an application at https://form.jotform.com/212066727579162

Jersey is a 1.5 year old female Weimaraner and Jules is a 5-year-old female Weimaraner. They came to rescue together, so we are looking for a home for them together. They are currently in one of NCWR’s amazing foster homes, where they are working on basic obedience and weight management to help them become sleek and slim girlies! Their foster family says the girls both love, love, love to chase a ball and will play Fetch as long as your arm will hold up!
Jersey is super friendly and sometimes shows her enthusiasm by jumping up to show her love - you’ll need to be sure on your feet, until she learns not to jump up. She also takes her job as “guard Weim” fairly seriously and will bark at passersby (she is friendly after she realizes “all is ok). She has not had much training , but she is a willing student who needs an experienced adopter that is willing to work with her on obedience and general manners. Jules can be timid with men, at least at first, so adopters will need to be patient with her and let her bond to all members of the household. Training will also be an important way for Jules to build confidence and bond with her humans. Jules has a history of seizures (three in her lifetime and none in the last year) but is not on any immediate medical regimen for them. Typically, they have occurred with over excursion but are reported to be mild. Both Jersey and Jules are great with children. However, according to our policy, we are looking for a home with children over the age of 10. We have found that the girls will do best in a home with friendly, socialized dogs close to their own size. They are unknown with cats; we will therefore not accept applications with kitties in the home. Both girls are spayed, house trained, and up to date on vaccines. Please take one minute to watch their video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyKJFJCV0dY . If you are interested in adopting Jules and Jersey and think you are a perfect home for them, please fill out an application and indicate that you are interested in these girls. |
Sweet Hudson came to NCWR as a stray from a shelter and we got him just in time. He's about 7 years old and a very easy keeper!! He's doing well with his foster's senior female and is housebroken. Now that he has gotten his ear infections treated, had a dental, and had some lipomas removed he is ready find his forever home. He is not known with young children or kitties. If you think you can give Hudson the life he has not had so far, but the one he definitely deserves, please fill out an application. He's located just north of the Sacramento area.

In Foster - Receiving Medical Care
Adoption Pending
Sweet little Mavis has had her stitches out and is doing really well! We think she's 8-9 months old and she weighs about 44lbs. She is not yet spayed but is scheduled for mid-Sept.
She's working on house training so she will need continued positive reinforcement for that. We would love a home that will keep her very fit! As a tripod she will need to be trim and healthy for life and needs a home that will get her out and about just like any other Weim. She will be fine with older children and is unknown with cats. |

Young Moki, a Great Weimar, (we thought) found herself in a shelter at 2 years old after being surrendered by her former family because of her size. NCWR stepped in and rescued her. After cross-posting Moki with NorCal Great Dane Rescue, where her new mom saw her and fell in love. Moki’s new mom says she is an absolute sweetheart even though she doesn’t realize her size or have any sense of personal space. Moki has a Corgi sibling who mom says totally bosses her around, which is really amusing. Moki’s mom did have her DNA tested and found she is 100% Great Dane. Mom says she will always be their honorary Weimaraner though. We are so happy for Moki and her new family.

Josie was pulled from a shelter by NCWR with a broken leg at only 1 year old. Her leg has healed beautifully and her new mom says she loves doing zoomies on the beach. She loves rocking her new rain wear. Josie also lives with bunnies who she has learned to cuddle with. Her mom says she is of course full of energy but very smart and very willing. Mom says the more Josie realizes she’s not going anywhere the more confident she is becoming. We are over the moon happy for Josie and her new mom.

Young Cooper was a beloved family member, who was in the same home since he was a puppy. However, family health circumstances caused the family to need a new home for Cooper, where he could get the time and attention a young Weim needs. His mom contacted NCWR to help find Cooper a new home. Of course, we were happy to help. Cooper is now in a home where he accompanies his dad to work every day and is getting tons of attention (aka) spoiled. We are very happy for Cooper and his new dad.

Three-year-old Huesito came to us from a family in Mexico, who had to move to a home where they could not keep him. His first stop was an amazing foster in San Francisco. Next, Huesito got caught up on some medical care that included a dental and an extraction. Last stop: His fantastic and loving foster family! You see, Huesito’s foster family decided to make this lucky boy a permanent member of their family, which includes mom, dad, and human kids who enjoy taking this lucky boy to the beach and many other fun activities! Congrats Huesito!

One-year-old Mordy is definitely a lucky boy! He came to us from a family in Redding, who could not give him the time, attention and training he needed. This wonderful boy was adopted by a family in a beautiful area located in the Sierra Foothills. Mordy is now a spoiled boy who gets tons of love and attention from his new mom and dad and enjoys hiking, camping and other outdoor adventures. What a lucky boy!

We are so happy to announce that amazing Aleeda is home! Her foster family has decided to keep her! How could they resist this smarty pants girl? This 12-year-old is a healthy, happy bundle of joy and energy loves to be active. In addition to all the basic commands, Miss Aleeda knows fun commands like “shake (both paws), sit pretty, play dead, roll over, and back up.” Aleeda’s new life includes mom, dad, human kids and fun activities with her canine sibling. Congratulations to Aleeda!

Max came to NCWR last year from a shelter and was adopted by a wonderful couple and gained a sweet four-legged sister in the process! Tragically and unexpectedly, both Max and her sister Zena lost their human dad and needed to come back to us. Because Max had a history of guarding her people, we put out the call for a special home that might consider keeping the girls together, as well as continue to work with Maxine on her training! As luck would have it a wonderful family applied with us and we are thrilled to report that Max and Zena have found their forever home—together! They have settled in beautifully with no issues into a family that realized right away how much love they had to give. Congratulations to these delightful and deserving girls!

Ada, now Bella, was surrendered by her owners who could not provide the attention and exercise she needed. A bit timid at first, Bella is unsure of change, but she is learning one important thing more and more each day—she’s home (and that she loves snow)! A family who had lost their previous Weim and very much missed having one, opened their heart and home to this little lady, and she is coming out of her shell thanks to an abundance of patience and love in her new digs in Reno. With two kids to also call her own, there is no shortage of attention, exercise, and fun for her now! Our best wishes to Bella and her new family.

Javi came to us as a very reactive pup, being surrendered by his owner who was not able to work with him on the training he needed. While Javi was in our care, we learned that he was an exceptionally loving dog and yes—super reactive! His training will be ongoing with his new owner who can not only provide company 100% of the time but also the guidance to work on the reactivity. As it turned out he was too stressed in city settings, but through a referral by one of our volunteers--Javi finally found his perfect match. His new dad is a Wildlife Biologist and was looking for a dog to train to work in the wilderness with him all day and hang out and chill all night. We decided this would be the perfect job for this active pup who always approaches everything with equal parts gusto and love. We can’t wait to see how this amazing guy matures with an experienced handler and tons of exercise and attention! Good boy, Javi!

Han Solo came to us late last summer with cataracts as well as exhibiting some seizure activity. It took months to stabilize the seizures and complete the required eye specialist consultation and testing. This wonderful boy finally received his cataract removal surgery in early December. Han’s foster family officially adopted him on Christmas day!
From an outdoor property dog that was blind-- to a young Weim that can see again--it's been an amazing journey for this handsome, sweet guy. All of this was made possible with an outpouring of financial support from our Weim community as well as that of his fosters' business in order to raise the necessary funds to cover the surgery. We can't thank you enough! |
Dear Oliver is being adopted by the family of his dreams. He is one year old and is a big boy that loves to play like a puppy! His new family consists of work from home Mom and two grown human kids with whom he will enjoy bonding by going for long walks, playing at the park and practicing obedience training. However, his favorite family member is an 18-month-old Sheep Doodle - Oliver's new canine sibling. The two youngsters love to play and roughhouse nonstop....Yes, a tired dog is a happy dog. Good boy Oliver! You landed in paradise!

Sadly, Gus was given up by his previous family who had given him to a friend. But great news for him, the person that received him knew just who to call to find him a wonderful home. This sweet guy loves to play and get the zoomies like most puppies--but unlike most of the dogs we get, he seemed to really like cats! Good news for his new family who had been waiting many, many months for a young dog that would not only peacefully coexist with their Ragdoll kitty but also play when the cat wants to play! Win-win! Gus, now known as Ody (short for Odysseus), will get tons of attention from his work from home dad, his son, and has a new buddy that looks almost as big as he is. He will enjoy all the trails and beach play near their Pleasanton area home. Congratulations Ody!

Midna's family could no longer care for her after they had a baby, and opted to reach out so that we could find her a wonderful new home that can handle that puppy energy with little alone time. We had someone waiting who had kitties as she does really well with them. She's now enjoying the great outdoors on hikes and runs in beautiful Pollock Pines!

Penny's family could no long keep her, so they made the difficult decision to contact NCWR to help. Of course, we were happy to help! Fate also stepped in....Her new family had lost their dear canine family member and had just decided it was time to heal their hearts and adopt a new furry family member. Penny is up to the challenge of filling that void and keeping her new mom and dad busy and entertained with love, laughter fun and activity. Good girl, Penny!

Beautiful Buddy had found himself in a shelter. That was when his luck changed.....NCWR stepped up and helped. First stop: One of NCWR's fabulous foster homes. Buddy's foster family succumbed to his handsomeness and charm. Last stop: Same as the first stop....his amazing foster family adopted him. Buddy now calls Mom, Dad and 3 children "home." We are so happy Buddy is home for the Holidays! Congratulations Buddy!

Buck's owner's job required that he travel extensively, so he contacted NCWR for help finding Buck a home where he could continue getting the time, attention and love that Buck was used to. Of course, we were happy to help! Handsome Buck was adopted by one of our wonderful past adopters, who had recently lost his dog. Buck now enjoys living in beautiful San Francisco and gets lots of attention, exercise and activities. We are so happy for Buck!

Dear Gracie came to us from the streets of Mexico. First step was to one of NCWR's fabulous foster homes, where she proved herself to be the sweetest of the sweet! Gracie was very much in need of a dental, so NCWR made that a reality. Then, with her new toothy smile, Gracie was adopted by one of our amazing volunteers and past adopters. She now enjoys life with Dad, work from home mom and canine brother, Buster. Congratulations Miss Gracie!

Tequila and Paco came to us from a shelter after their owner dropped them off. We brought them into the Nor Cal Weim fold as a bonded pair and believe they were likely littermates about two years old; both pups exhibited some leash reactivity but were otherwise very sweet and friendly.
Sadly, a vet exam and testing revealed that Tequila had a hemangiosarcoma on her shoulder. Originally the plan was to amputate the leg, but further scans revealed the cancer had spread to other organs, including her liver and spleen. Tequila lived out the remainder of her life with a wonderful foster family who took phenomenal care of her and made sure she knew nothing but kindness and love. We can’t save them all, but we can make sure that they live the rest of their lives in palliative care knowing they are valued family members. NCWR can’t thank our foster family enough for stepping up to be there for her as it could not have been easy for them. RIP sweet girl. On a happier note, her handsome brother Paco (now aptly named “Beau”), met his forever family while at our trainer’s home! He is living his best life and we are so happy to report that even when dressed as a turkey, he’s enjoying each day to the fullest! He gets all the adventure, exercise and cuddles a young pup could possibly need. Congratulations Beau! |
Young Rudy's (formerly Knight) former life of being sequestered in the basement for most of the day will soon be just a bad memory. The family that purchased him did not do their research & were ill-equipped to deal with the energy of our beloved breed. But Rudy’s new Mom & Dad have the experience, time & energy to ensure that Rudy will have a happy, fulfilling life! They were looking for a companion to share their adventures.Rudy will run, hike & explore the trails near their home in Dublin. He is in dog heaven & loving his new life.

Indigo (formerly Lily) was purchased as a puppy & lived with 5 other Weimaraners. The pack dynamics changed & dogs were fighting so 7 year old Indigo was surrendered.Indigo’s new Mom has the perfect, peaceful home for her with 15 yr old Blue Boy, adopted from NCWR in 2013. Mom is a veterinarian so Indigo will get the best care.Indigo & her new family take a 3 mile walk along the river trail near their Galt home every day. The best part? Indigo has her own pool! Mom says Indigo is amazing! Have a wonderful & pampered life Indigo!

NCWR responded to an ad on Craigslist advertising two 10 month old littermates. Their owner was moving & could not take them. Toby's new life is magical with a home in Pacifica & a second vacation home in South Lake Tahoe. Toby is living his best life as a beach dog with his new housemate Pepper, a 2 1/2 year old Dobie girl. They are best buds & his partner in crime! Toby, Pepper & family will have many walks during the week & beach romps on the weekends. Mom says that Toby is a friendly & easy going boy!

Remi was purchased from a breeder as a puppy but her surrendering owner recently went back to work full time & Remi was being neglected. Remi’s new Dads were looking for a new companion after losing their 14 year-old boy Finley. They lost no time making plans to fly to California from Oregon to have Remi join their family. Remi is already snuggling with her new Dads & loves the beach & her 4 walks a day! Dad says they are so thankful to have found Remi… she is super sweet & quick to learn. Have a fabulous life Remi!
