fractures. Logan was in terrible pain for several weeks, but his owners could not afford treatment, so nothing was done.
Animal Control convinced the family to surrender Logan, and Oakland Animal Shelter (OAS) and Friends for OAS
arranged for a complex surgery. OAS also paid $3000 for this expensive procedure. Logan did fine in surgery He now
has a plate with pins on one side, and had a hip salvation procedure ("FHO") on the other. Logan currently is not really
using his back legs property, he tends to lean against things when he starts to fall, etc. He is expected to recover some
mobility and will hopefully live a normal life with few restrictions—But only if he goes through 2-3 months of dedicated
physical therapy and gradual strengthening exercises that NCWR will pay for.
OAS contacted NCWR after the surgery to see if we could take in Logan and find him a forever home, but first. find a
foster family that could provide the dedication and time to rehabilitate Logan. NCWR has found a remarkable foster
family in the Sacramento area that took him in and will guide him through his recovery.
Logan started his rehabilitation the last week of February. He will be starting with exercise on the underwater
treadmill to strengthen his atrophied rear legs and to help him regain his balance. In addition to this twice a week
schedule, Logan will also benefit from one or two chiropractic sessions, and lots of at home exercises.
OAS saw potential in this Weimaraner and saved his life. He is a sweet Weimaraner with a great will to live and get
better. He is also a tough little guy who is currently trying to lift himself up with no muscle in his back legs. After only
one week of therapy, the foster family has already seen improvement and are amazed by Logan’s CAN DO attitude.
This will be the ongoing story of Logan’s recuperation complete with photos, videos, and commentary from his
remarkable foster family. Any donations received will be used to defer Logan's expenses and to help repay Oakland
Animal Services for the surgery.
Stay tuned for next week’s update and photo additions.
LOGAN'S PROGRESS AFTER FOUR MONTHS
Logan has met a bunch of new friends. He made an appearance, participated in and completed Stockton’s Doggie Dash. On the walk around the park, he ran…and ran...and ran the whole way around. The shortest distance between two points for Logan is a Zig Zag. He met and played with several other Weims and met his match with a 4 month old Great Dane. He was one tired puppy when we got home. Logan has officially PASSED the stairs test! He went up and down a flight of carpeted stairs today! He needed a little encouragement to try but once he did it there was no problem. He acted like it was a new game- up-down-up-down-up-down. He is growing into quite the strong young dog. A family who met him when he first arrived with us commented at how strong he is and how much he’s progressed, adjusted and grown in 4 short months. Logan may have started out as a ‘special needs’ dog but as his vet said recently he just needs to be allowed to be a dog. We agree. He is just another dog in our house. We have the dozens of half-eaten chew toys to prove it! As we look at him sleeping upside down and sprawled on the sofa, we see another puppy, living life to the fullest every moment.
