| Shiffra's Gala Speech We want a perfect dog... Of course, that’s not what the applicants say, but you can sense it in their description, “ female, 1-4, leash trained, potty trained, good with kids, good with cats, (we also get “must get along with canaries, rabbits”, you name it) & she must also be the social butterfly at the dog park. Who should I place with them? Annie, abandoned & left to run the streets? Daisy, chained to a dog house with a mud floor all her life? Or maybe Chloe, ignored in the backyard after the first baby came. We don’t get perfect dogs in rescue, we get flawed, sometimes seriously flawed. What we need are applicants who can see that “diamond in the rough”, people who can see that willing spirit, that big heart wanting to please, but afraid & not having a clue how to. We need the people that have the faith & commitment to turn a shy dog into one who trusts enough to accept a hug. People that take the time to change an unsocialized dog into a dog happy to be at a dog park, take the out of control dog & have her develop into a dog you are proud to walk. But you know that & that’s why you are here. You took a chance & you got the companion of a lifetime, the companion of your dreams. I thank you & I applaud you. |
